As expected, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers fought a hotly contested game. With both teams poised to enter the NFC playoffs, no squad gave an inch until the game’s final minutes. Eventually, the Lions clinched a postseason berth courtesy of Jake Bates’ game-winning field goal.
Before Bates gave Detroit its 11th consecutive victory and 12th in 13 games, the Lions made a bold call on fourth-and-one, even though they were already deep in enemy territory. Quarterback Jared Goff handed the ball to David Montgomery before falling, leading to a seven-yard gain and a fresh set of downs. The Lions used the additional possessions to reduce the game clock further, ensuring there was no time left as Bates attempted the field goal.
In addition to clinching a playoff berth, the victory improved Detroit’s home record to 6-1. Goff threw three touchdown passes, while Montgomery had a rushing score. Tim Patrick had two receiving touchdowns, while Jahmyr Gibbs had one.
While Detroit is already guaranteed a postseason spot, they haven’t wrapped up the NFC North because the Minnesota Vikings are just one game behind at 11-2. Meanwhile, despite the loss, the Packers still have a solid 9-4 record.
The Lions-Vikings game in Week 18 might determine the division champions. Green Bay still has a shot, but Detroit and Minnesota would need to suffer a string of losses to claim the NFC North crown.
