The Dallas Cowboys have announced the hiring of Matt Eberflus as their defensive coordinator for the 2025 NFL season. He returns to the Cowboys eight years after becoming their linebackers coach and passing game coordinator. Eberflus will work with head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who was promoted from the offensive coordinator role.
Before joining the Cowboys, he was the Chicago Bears’ head coach but was fired during this season. He finished his head coaching stint in Chicago with a 14-32 record. The Bears finished with a 5-12 record despite having a talented roster featuring Caleb Williams, Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, D’Andre Swift, and Cole Kmet on offense. Meanwhile, the Bears had Montez Sweat, Tremaine Edmunds, and Jaylon Johnson on defense.

Before joining the Bears, became a top coaching candidate after having success as the Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator. Eberflus also had a coaching stint as Cleveland Browns linebackers coach, his first job in the NFL. Before working in the pros, The Toledo alum coached his alma mater for eight years. He took on various roles from outside linebackers coach, defensive backs coach, and defensive coordinator.
This time, Eberflus will work with the Cowboys defense led by DeMarcus Lawrence, DaRon Bland, Trevon Diggs, and Micah Parsons.
