Flacco is backo in lineup

Bengals replace Browning with former Brown

It looked like it was it for Joe Flacco when the Browns pulled the plug a week ago. But not so: the well-traveled 40-year-old was just moving on up in the AFC North, going from its last-place team (1-4 Cleveland) to 2nd (2-3 Cincinnati).

Back in the Summer, I was intrigued by Flacco as a starter in Cleveland, thinking -- based on the way he played the last two seasons -- that he'd be a huge upgrade for the passing game. In 12 starts for the Browns and Colts the last two years, Flacco averaged 293 passing yards and 2 TDs per game. That seemed really promising for Jerry Jeudy and company, and if that's the guy the Bengals just traded for -- having given up on struggling Jake Browning -- it will be really nice for Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Fingers crossed. Because Flacco looked pretty washed in Cleveland, struggling through four games before being unceremoniously benched for a third-round rookie. Looking at all quarterbacks who've attempted at least 100 passes this season, Flacco and Browning have not been too dissimilar.

Table shows those quarterbacks, sorted by passer rating. (If I'd started by most interceptions or fewest touchdown passes, Flacco would still be at the bottom.)

Nonetheless, I'm going to call this a good move by the Bengals. Flacco at least has the confidence and experience to aggressively sling it around to his targets, which Browning did not. There will be some interceptions (big thumbs up on the Green Bay defense this week), but Cincinnati was getting that anyway, without any of the positives most weeks.

I doubt this will be a move that puts Cincinnati on a playoff course, but at least it should help Chase et al.

Interesting move in division. Cleveland must not think much of Flacco and shedding $ . As a Chase owner gotta hope for the best.

In the division, but they don't play Cincinnati again until the last game of the season. He did look pretty washed, but maybe it was a Cleveland thing. Running the Burrow type offense may not be a bad thing. I just picked him up to watch and see.

Also the Browns are 1-4. I applaud them for realizing that the Bengals maybe getting a quarterback upgrade is not going to be the key move that keeps Cleveland out of the playoffs three months from now.

I'm glad to see this happen. It can't be easy for a vet like Flacco (who won the super bowl with the Ravens) to take a seat in a hopeless cause. Also, Zac Taylor once a more wide open system than the one Stefanski runs in Cleveland. I'm "happy for Flacky".

Flacco has to be pumped. He gets another gig with major Wr upgrades. Regardless of how this ends it’s a bonus for him. Starter vs bench . If they only had a little defense .

As someone who spent high picks on Chase Brown and Higgins...help me Joe-bi Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope

Just to correct an earlier egregious undetected post Re: Flacco: 'Zac Taylor RUNs a more wide open system'. Didn't want what I left up there to stick.

When I drew the #1 pick, I was ecstatic. I figured Chase would be an electric presence on my team. Until, that is, Burrow's bad break. Chase was all-or-nothing with Browning: 20 yds and 0 TDs or 120 yds and 2 TDs. I do like Flacco's stronger arm and willingness to sling it downfield. I don't think he will be a miraculous imitation of Burrow, but he's not going to be worse than Browning. I have hope.

Bengals O line still bad and the statue that is Joe Flacco won’t help that. But cost almost nothing and he really can’t be worse

A good stat to break this down- how many QB's aquired by trade during the regular season went on to post good numbers ? One would think it would be hard, not knowing the playbook or verbiage. In fact, such guys are rare- Carson Palmer is one of the few guys I can even think of.
