Egbuka makes his mark

Rookie receiver taking the league by storm

There’s something to be said for firing some draft picks at rookie receivers. Most years, a couple of rookies finish with top-30 numbers, and those guys tend to dramatically outperform where they were selected. Emeka Egbuka is looking like one of those guys this year.

Only Egbuka has quickly zoomed past the “relevant rookie” level. He’s looking like he might be one of the top dozen wide receivers in the league right now.

The early numbers have been pretty special. He’s caught 25 passes for 445 yards and 5 TDs in his first five games. That’s a career start on par with guys like Randy Moss and Ja’Marr Chase.

Egbuka is not only seeing the ball and scoring touchdowns, he’s getting downfield. He’s averaging 17.8 yards per catch, with a 30-yard reception in all but one of his games. That’s a surprise to me, in that he averaged only 12.6 and 12.5 yards per catch his final two seasons at Ohio State. He’s not a burner – ran 4.45 at his Pro Day.

But the production is pretty awesome. The search tools at Pro-Football-Reference indicate that only six receivers in league history have compiled more receiving yards in their first five games.

While the numbers look great, I can’t say that I saw them coming in August. There was some optimism about Egbuka in camp, but the Bucs (to me, at least) looked like they would decline offensively, having lost their offensive coordinator and with Tristan Wirfs injured heading into the season.

And they had other wide receivers – Jalen McMillan (who’s hurt now) was great at the end of last year, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin on the way. So difficult, I think, to back things up and logically conclude that Egbuka would be the rookie receiver to pick.

Two receivers, recall, were selected with top-10 picks: Travis Hunter and Tetairoa McMillan. And I saw Matthew Golden make a couple of preseason passes, making him look like a possibility to be Green Bay’s leading receiver. Golden may still turn things around, and McMillan looks fine, but Egbuka seems to be wrapping up that Rookie of the Year award pretty quickly.

Evans will be healthy soon and maybe Godwin starts to gain some traction but there is a reason I didn't draft Evans at all. I think Egbuka is going to continue as the Alpha. Just wish I would have drafted him at least once.

Paired up Egbuka and Addison in a couple guillotine leagues thinking that once Godwin came back I wouldn't really need Egbuka anymore because I would have Addison back. Turns out that I won't really need Addison.

I drafted Egbuka and not a day goes by that I don't receive a trade offer for him. I wish I had an auto decline option to save myself some time.

I watched all his games at Ohio State so I already knew he was good. I drafted him for 3 of my 4 teams and I'm kicking myself for not bidding enough in the auction league..

Great Article! I recall sitting in our draft, it's my pick in the 9th round, and I've got your Cheat Sheet in front of me. One name is glaringly standing out, and it was Egbuka. Although I knew I'd get flak for taking a Buckeye (we're all from Michigan), I took him. Thank you for rating him where you did. He's leading my receiver corps.

I’d rather be lucky than good. I picked him late in our draft (TD only league) as a dart throw, and he’s been the best of my receivers, which includes AJ Brown, Tee Higgins and Courtland Sutton…..

Drafted Egbuka in the 8th Round ,last year it was Bucky Irving in the middle to late rounds, next year I will be paying attention to the skill players Tampa Bay drafts.

I took Egbuka as my third pick in a 4-player keeper league behind Hampton and McMillan. Egbuka is certainly exceeding expectations so far. Jerry Rice wasn't a burner either, but he had "football speed". Of course Egbuka is no Rice, but I hope to have him as an impact keeper for several years.

Drafted Egbuka. Traded him after week 2 for Ladd, because I was holding Godwin. Genius move. Just got lit up by Egbuka, while Godwin gave me nothing but a headache.

Now the guy has a hamstring issue.. might it be the "curse of the FFI spotlight player or guy on their cover?" Egbuka was a great find & thank you for the data in preseason about him and their Bucs state of receivers. I drafted him- as far a curse well Josh Allen is going strong as a QB for me.
