Question

Washington in 2012 drafted Robert Griffin No. 2 overall, then picked Kirk Cousins in the fourth round. Cousins (who signed with Las Vegas on Thursday) has started 167 career games. Who was the last other quarterback to start over 90 games after his team had first taken another quarterback with a top 5 overall pick? Looking at 1994.

Answer

Gus Frerotte. Again Washington, with Heath Shuler picked No. 3 overall. Shuler was employed longer in Washington with the House of Representatives than with the football team. Frerotte started 93 games. Three other quarterbacks have started over 100 after their original teams took other quarterbacks early. Ken Stabler was a second-round pick, but with an asterisk (first-rounder Eldridge Dickey was a great quarterback at Tennessee State, but Oakland’s intention all along was to move him to wide receiver). Steve DeBerg started 140 games, but almost nobody remembers Dallas picking second-round Glenn Carano. Lynn Dickey (111 starts) fits better in the Cousins-Frerotte profile, with the Oilers in 1971 picking Dan Pastorini No. 3 overall.
