We used to have a rule in our fantasy league that any field goal of 50-plus yards would receive double value. But the kickers today are so good, it became obsolete. There were 29 kickers last year who made a field goal of at least 55 yards.
Kickers keep getting better, and the league has helped them along by loosening the restrictions on breaking in balls. They’re letting them work on the leather, making them nice and kicker friendly now.
The result has been an arms race (a legs race, if you will). Cam Little made the two longest kicks in league history last year. Chris Boswell made all 7 of his field goals from 55-60 yards last year. Will Reichard has gone 7 of 8 from 50-plus over the last two years, while Ka’imi Fairbairn and Chase McLaughlin have both gone 7 of 9.
Kickers have never been better, to the point where the league might have to think about narrowing the uprights. In our fantasy league, we’ve raised our doubling bar to 55 yards – for us, that now where the double value kicks in.
The league publishes breakdowns for kicks form 50-59 yards, but with kicks of 52 yards being chip shots nowadays, I figure it makes more sense to instead look at efficiency from 55-plus. That where the talent starts getting more apparent. So I have started tracking numbers from that distance.
Brandon Aubrey has been top dog of late. Others have been a little more accurate, but Aubrey has attempted 22 field goals of at least 55 yards over the last three years – 7 more than anyone else.
In the 2023-25 seasons, Matt Gay and Daniel Carlson are the two who have struggled the most on this kicks – 4 of 12 for Gay, and 2 of 8 for Carlson. This makes it seem weird that the Raiders are replacing Carlson with Gay.
