Skattebo or Skatte-No?

Giants back a tricky selection

It's a tough offseason for knowing how to handle the Giants backfield. The NFL Draft being over provides some clarity, but things are still uncertain.

At least we know that John Harbaugh won't have Jeremiyah Love atop the depth chart. Maybe they would have selected him, maybe not. Instead, they're running it back with the same backfield as a year ago -- Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, Devin Singletary.

Skattebo suffered a devastating leg injury last year. Fractured fibula, dislocated ankle, and ligament damage. Pretty bad, but I feel like we have to view it as a good sign that the team didn't use a draft pick or big free agent signing at the position.

Harbaugh himself hasn't been particularly helpful with injury info. Asked about Skattebo (and Malik Nabers) three weeks ago, here's what he had to say when asked how much the two would do this spring: "Not too much. Skatt is probably gonna be ahead of Malik with that. I think you guys all know that. Skatt will probably get out there at some point in time … Malik is gonna be more toward into training camp."

So Skattebo will probably be doing some field work "at some point in time." Thanks, John.

On the field, Skattebo was very good as a rookie, better than would usually be expected from a fourth-round pick. On a per-game basis (looking at the seven games where he played at least half the snaps, he was a top-10 running back in PPR leagues.

I don't think it's safe to rank him anywhere near that high. New coaching staff, other running backs, devastating injury.

I do, however, think signs are favorable for him being healthy before the start of the season. Just feels like the team would have done more (anything, really) at the position if they weren't counting on having Skattebo available. A guy who will probably be ranked modestly in the magazine, but could rise up nicely once he's back on the field and practicing fully.
