Favorable signs for Skattebo

Second-year back active at OTAs

One player it looks like we'll be a little too low on in the magazine is Cam Skattebo. I have a feeling he'll be moving up in the July Update.

Skattebo suffered a devastating leg injury last year. Fractured fibula, dislocated ankle, and ligament damage. Prior to the NFL Draft, a popular rumor had John Harbaugh and the Giants hoping to select Jeremiyah Love in the top 5, a reason to suspect they were either concerned about Skattebo or at least trying to get better.

But Love was taken at No. 3, so we'll never know if New York would have selected him. What we do know is they didn't add anyone else of note at the position, running it back with the same backfield as a year ago -- Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy, Devin Singletary.

And at the team's minicamp a week ago, Skattebo was doing individual on-field work at the first practice and participating in 11-on-11 drills by the second day. No reason for him to be doing that at this early point if they had any reservations about the health of that ankle. Looking an awful lot like he'll be a Week 1 starter -- absolutely.

Skattebo was very good as a rookie, better than would usually be expected from a fourth-round pick. On a per-game basis (looking at the seven games where he played at least half the snaps), he was a top-10 running back in PPR leagues.

Healthy for Week 1 doesn't mean there's no risk of missing time. Skattebo is a high-contact runner who's going to be breaking tackles rather than running away from people, and it's a new coaching staff that could be looking to use more of a committee (and there's even still time to add another veteran).

But I feel better about his prospects than I did a month ago. I think he can be drafted as a solid starter, and should be ranked accordingly. That will happen in the rankings update.
