Out like Flynn

There hasn't been much talk about the Matt Flynn trade market, but that could change between now and the draft. Flynn, recall, was signed to a decent-sized contract to start for Seattle last offseason, and it looks like he'll be playing out that contract with another team.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports says three teams have talked to Seattle about a trade for Russell Wilson's backup. It's not hard to guess the teams; they're the ones currently set to start Blaine Gabbert, Tarvaris Jackson and Terrelle Pryor (assuming Carson Palmer is released, as expected).

Not surprisingly, those are also the teams connected to the projected top quarterback in the draft, West Virginia's Geno Smith. Presumably a team wouldn't trade for Flynn and then draft Smith, putting Flynn in the same situation he ended up in last year. If a Flynn trade goes down before the draft, you can reasonably guess that team won't be in the mix to use a first-round pick on a quarterback. If a trade instead happens after the draft, it will likely be to a team that misses out on a highly regarded rookie.

Flynn to Jacksonville seems to make some sense. The Jaguars have a nice young receiving duo in Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts, and they're also the team that most recently used a top-10 pick on a quarterback. With no sure thing in the draft, would they want to use a top pick on another passer, or instead swap a mid- or late-rounder for Flynn, give him a shot to unseat Gabbert, and address one of their other myriad needs with their first-round pick?

Seattle has of course said they're willing to keep Flynn around another year as Wilson's backup, but what else are they going to say? Bottom line is he makes a little too much money to be a No. 2, and a team with Super Bowl aspirations like Seattle might want to go with a slightly more proven veteran commodity at that spot anyway.
