Factoid

From worst to first

Climbing from cellar to playoffs is surprisingly common

The NFL switched to the eight-division format, with 32 teams, in 2002. Since that time, every year at least one last-place team has made the playoffs the next season. Who will be that team this year?

Somewhere, Pete Rozelle is smiling. He also wanted a balanced league with parity, and the NFL has that. Every year, it seems, some team goes from being terrible to making the playoffs.

I decided to pull out the old standings and check those numbers. Since the shift to the eight-division format in 2002, it's happened every single year. In each of those years, at least one team has moved up from the basement to making the playoffs.

And it's usually more than one -- 23 teams have done this in the last 10 years. In only three of those seasons was there only one of these teams.

From last (in division) to the playoffs
YearWLT
2003Dallas (5-11)1060
2003Carolina (7-9)1150
2003Kansas City (8-8)1330
2004Atlanta (5-11)1150
2005Washington (6-10)1060
2005Chicago (5-11)1150
2005Tampa Bay (5-11)1150
2006Philadelphia (6-10)1060
2006New Orleans (3-13)1060
2006NY Jets (4-12)1060
2007Washington (5-11)970
2007Tampa Bay (4-12)970
2008Philadelphia (8-8)961
2008Atlanta (4-12)1150
2008Miami (1-15)1150
2008Baltimore (5-11)1150
2009New Orleans (8-8)1330
2010Kansas City (4-12)1060
2011Denver (4-12)880
2011Cincinnati (4-12)970
2012Washington (5-11)1060
2012Minnesota (3-13)1060
2012Indianapolis (2-14)1150

So while it may seem weird, chances are at least one of the last-place teams from 2012 will make the playoffs. Probably two.

Of that group, I'm comfortable dismissing Jacksonville and Buffalo. Arizona and Cleveland are buried in divisions with three other good teams. So I guess a surprise team or two should come out of the group including Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Detroit.

What say you? Which last-place team has the best chance of making the playoffs?

Kansas City looks like a lock, in my eyes (and I;m a Raiders fan, so that's hard to say out loud.) Reid (& Smith for that matter) is gonna be fired up to prove a lot of naysayers wrong. He's got the pieces in place to field a very tough team.

If we're assuming that a terrible team will suddenly become good, then we can't rule out that a team or two could go from good to bad. I wouldn't rule out Cleveland or Arizona

To be a little more specific, at least one team in each of the past 10 seasons has also gone from 4th to 1st in the division (this article is about 4th place teams subsequently making the playoffs, which includes wild cards). I think that Philly has the best chance of going 4th to 1st and that Kansas City will contend for a wild card.

Clarifying for Geoff Smith (and others). The above list shows all teams that have gone from 4th place to making the playoffs. Some of the teams didn't win their division (finishing 2nd or 3rd and claiming wild cards). And the numbers will be similar going the other way. A lot of first-place teams likely finished last in their division the next year.

Could be that teams jumping from last to playoffs are counterbalanced recordwise by a greater number of teams getting a bit worse. Numbers don't have to be similar going the other way. Though I too suspect they are.

If anybody, it's got to be Detroit. They were a playoff team the year before, lost a lot of close games last year, have a high-powered offense that can score points in a hurry and play from behind if need be, and they have a lot of talent on defense. A quick rebound isn't hard to see. The only thing holding them back is their coach and a lack of discipline, which is also a reflection of their coach.

I say Philly and Tampa are wildcards in 2013

I know KC is a poplar choice and believe it. Being an Eagles fan w/season tix, I know Big Red can win, and he will early with the Chiefs but it will be short and sweet and he CAN NOT defend against Peyton Manning. He has chewed Andy Reid everytime except the last time when Peyton didn't have anyone to throw to. 2x games , 2 losses. Bet it!
