We've reached the 14th round of the extended-format experts draft I'm participating in. It's a no-transactions, best-ball league started by Alan Satterlee of Fantasy Football Warehouse. The team you draft is the one you're committed to for the entire season.
I've got Alfred Morris and Montee Ball as my top 2 running backs. I wouldn't have minded grabbing Ronnie Hillman, but he went too early (to my mind) at 9.02. I would have considered him strongly if he'd made it to me at 9.12, but I'm convinced Ball is going to win that job and Hillman will be a change-of-pace guy, at best.
Roy Helu, the likely handcuff to Morris, made it into the 12th round. I nearly took him at 12.01, opting instead for a second tight end -- Dustin Keller. I think Keller is awfully underrated. Nobody thinks much of Mike Wallace's prospects in Miami, and Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson are just mediocre receivers. I think Keller could catch the most passes in Miami -- seriously. I didn't think he'd made it 22 more picks, and thought Helu might. I was wrong.
Now I'm wishing I had Helu, for the peace of mind of having Morris' handcuff. Of course, that handcuff could still turn out to be Evan Royster (who I may take in a couple of rounds) or rookie Chris Thompson, but Helu is the current player to own.
I am pretty pleased with my roster right now. I waited on a tight end, and still got what I think will be a pair of top-10 guys. A top-5 QB and a reliable backup with Eli Manning. Five of our top-40 or so wideouts, and possibly 3 top-20 running backs. But still, If I had it to do over, I think I'd probably take Helu. I don't think he'd be in my best-ball starting lineup more than Keller might be, but I'd probably sleep easier at night.
