New options added to custom rankings generator

We've added a couple of oft-requested options to the custom rankings / auction values generator.
  • If your league gives bonus points for running/receiving for more than 100 yards, or for passing for over 300 yards, you'll be pleased, because that option is now supported.
  • In addition, we now support rules that award fantasy points for your defense, based on how many points it allows.

To add either of these options to your existing custom scoring profile, sign in. Then hover over the "YOUR STUFF" button at the top of the page. and click the link that says "Scoring Systems." You'll see a list of your custom scoring rules, which you may then edit, save, and view.

Bonus points for running/receiving for more than 100 yards, or for passing for over 300 yards: During the preseason, we don't project stats for all 256 games in advance. Instead, we look at each player's projected yards per game, and we assess the percentage likelihood that he will exceed 100 yards. Let's say your league awards 4 points to a receiver who exceeds 100 yards. We project your receiver to average 68 yards per game. And we know that when we project 68 receiving yards for a player, he exceeds 100 yards 17 percent of the time. Therefore, our projection will award that player 17 percent of the 4-point bonus, multiplied by the number of games that we project him to play.

Fantasy points for your defense, based on how many points it allows. Again, we are not projecting the scores for every game. Instead, we project a total number of points that the team will allow during the season. We've used data from the past 11 NFL seasons to build probability tables. When a defense allows 18 points per game, what percentage of its games are shutouts? In what percentage of games does it allow 3 points? 6 points? 7 points? Etc. We do similar scatter charts for teams that allow 15 points per game, 16 points per game, etc. And we cross reference those percentages against the parameters that you enter in your scoring profile.

Here's an example, of one way you might set it up:

DEFENSIVE POINTS ALLOWED Award:
10 points if it holds its opponent to 0 points.
7 points if it holds its opponent between 1 and 9 points.
5 points if it holds its opponent between 10 and 16 points.
0 points if it holds its opponent between 17 and 29 points.
-3 points if it holds its opponent between 30 and points.

You can break those numbers at any increments of points you wish.

You can display your player rankings by clicking on "YOUR STUFF." Then click on the link that says "Fantasy Index Cheat Sheet rankings and auction values." You'll see a list of various scoring systems, including your custom scoring system. When you click the link for your custom rankings, you will see the player listings. To the right of each player's name is his number of projected fantasy points. Each of those is a hyperlink; if you click it, the system will show you how it did the math to calculate that value.

When you store your custom rankings profile, it will automatically update for any issue you order, whether this week, next month, next year or in five years.
