Investment Realtor from Alameda, Calif., is the early leader in the Fantasy Index Open competition. But there are still five positions left to grade.
Steve Moyer, an investment realtor from Alameda, Calif., is the winner of the kickers portion of the Fantasy Index Open. And he can thank Nick Novak for leading the way.
The Fantasy Index Open, as a refresher, is the contest where you rank the top 20 players at each position. Picks were due before the start of the first preseason game. No rosters, starting lineups or waiver moves. The higher you rank a player, the more he counts towards your score. If you rank a guy 20th, he doesn’t count so much. If you don’t rank him at all, you take a zero for that player.
Over 200 readers and analysts in the business (it’s a free competition open to all comers – hence the name Fantasy Index Open) took the time to put together an entry. That’s not easy; it takes time to come up with rankings for 20 players at six different positions – that’s 120 rankings.
The top 2 finishers in this contest win berths in the Fantasy Experts Poll in the magazine (which runs just the same way but is limited to 20 participants).
And the overall winner of the competition – the best of the 209 entries – wins a monstrously huge trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. They’ve kindly offered to partner on this thing.
Now we’re starting to score it, and that should be completed in about a week. A lot of entries and numbers, and it takes time (and we’ve got other things we’re working on).
For the kicker position, Moyer is king. He’s followed by Kevin Smith, a student from Philadelphia, and Brant Hollenbeck from Lansing. He’s in sales.
A shout out is also in order for Isaac McNally, an evangelist from Montana. He finished in 8th, but he would have finished 1st under the old scoring system we used up until a few years back. (We used to base the scoring on a descending scale of 20-1 points; we shifted that to 30-11 points to make the picks in the teens more valuable).
But back to Moyer. What did he do to separate himself from the other 208 entries. He misfired at the top, putting Matt Bryant ahead of Stephen Gostkowski, so he lost some points there. But most everybody had those guys in their top 4, so that wasn’t a big deal.
Reviewing the picks, Nick Novak was the driver. Almost 80 percent of the entries didn’t list him at all. But Moyer was one of only nine guys who ranked Novak in his top 12. Novak went only to score 144 points (3rd at the position), so that really helped Moyer’s score.
As a reminder on how this is scored. Moyer ranked Novak 12th, so those 144 points get multiplied by 19 (that’s 31 minus 12, which is where he ranked him). So Moyer got 2,736 points for that selection. For typical entries, maybe you have a 100-point kicker there, and you’re getting 1,900 points – an 836-point difference.
Moyer also benefitted by not even listing Josh Brown or David Akers. Those guys were on most ballots, but they had lousy years. Moyer benefitted by advising everyone to say away from them.
It’s a complicated scoring system, but this is a different kind of competition. We’re trying to test overall knowledge. On the overall scoreboard, only two entries finished under 44,000 points, and one of them was a guy who thought he was only supposed to give a top 10 at each position. Moyer was the only one of the 209 to crack the 52,000-point barrier.
We’ll grade the six positions separately, then name the overall winner.
