Browns hire a Shanahan

We spent a little time chiding the Browns for their coaching search, so some ink is due when they finally get around to rounding out their staff. At the end of the day, it looks like a pretty good.

Mike Pettine will be the head coach and likely oversee the defense; he ran a very good defense in Buffalo last season. And Kyle Shanahan, who ran a strong offense in Washington the last few years, has been officially hired as offensive coordinator.

That's a positive for the few skill position guys the Browns have established, and also for whoever they bring in. The Shanahans have long been associated with great running games, even using lesser players at the position, so maybe incumbent Edwin Baker or Dion Lewis? Or whoever else the teams signs or drafts.

It's even better news for Josh Gordon, since Shanahan's offenses have long focused on heavily targeting the No. 1 wideout -- Andre Johnson in Houston, Pierre Garcon in Washington. They also make use of the tight end in the passing game, which is a plus for Jordan Cameron. Fred Davis, Jordan Reed and Owen Daniels all were big part of the game plans in recent years under Shanahan.

The Browns need to figure out who their quarterback is going to be; Brian Hoyer is a possibility, there's been talk of a Kirk Cousins trade, and the Browns will also likely select one of the draft's top quarterback. We'll even throw in the annual Ryan Mallett possibility. Apart from that uncertainty, though, this hire looks like a positive step for Cleveland.
