Percy Harvin looked great on Super Bowl Sunday, but the Vikings aren't having any seller's remorse for letting him go. The rookie receiver they picked up in that trade looks like he could be a big star for a lot of years.
Percy Harvin had the nice Super Bowl, picking up 30 and 15 yards on a pair of sweeps and making the Broncos look like they were wearing ski boots on an 88-yard kickoff return. But the Vikings aren’t kicking themselves for trading away Harvin last spring. Along with some extras, they’ve got Cordarrelle Patterson, who looks like he could be another Harvin – only younger and a lot cheaper.
Patterson returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns, caught 4 scores (including a 79-yarder) and ran for 3 TDs.
No other wide receiver this century has run for 3 TDs.
Patterson wasn’t the only good running rookie receiver, either. Tavon Austin ran for 151 yards for the Rams, including a 65-yard touchdown. Other than these two, only seven other wide receivers in the last 12 years have run for over 150 yards in a season.
Too early to say whether either of these receivers will wind up on my draft board for 2014, but for both guys I’ll be projecting some ancillary value – maybe 100-plus rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, and probably a kick return touchdown for Patterson.
