The Tennessee Titans have a new head coach in Ken Whisenhunt, and used their top two draft picks on an offensive tackle and running back. Not surprising to see that several big names will need to have strong seasons, or preseasons, to keep their job.
Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean lists Jake Locker, Shonn Greene and Michael Oher among his players on the spot for 2014. He doesn't believe Greene's roster spot is in jeopardy from the selection of Bishop Sankey, but says "stranger things have happened." Locker will be safe to start the season, but Wyatt believes if he struggles the team could turn to Charlie Whitehurst (who Ken Whisenhunt, for some reason, is a big fan of), or try to coach up sixth-rounder Zach Mettenberger.
Wyatt doesn't think Locker will get beat out this season, but it's reasonable to think this is his last chance. If the Titans had a better Plan B, it would seem likely to happen sooner rather than later.
As for Michael Oher, the Titans gave him a big free-agent contract to be their right tackle, but then drafted Taylor Lewan with a first-round pick. Wyatt is certain Michael Roos will be one starter, so Lewan and Oher are competing for one spot. The Ravens, who had no interest in retaining Oher, would probably bet on Lewan winning the job.
Fantasy-wise, the Greene decision is the most intriguing one. Should the Titans decide to cut bait with him, Sankey would suddenly look like a feature back with only Jackie Battle and Dexter McCluster to compete with.
