The Fantasy Index Open is an ‘open’ competition – open to professionals as well as readers. And it’s a guy from the industry side, Mike Nease of Fantasy Sharks, who came out on top at the running back position.
Todd Voorhees, a public affairs manager from Chula Vista, Calif., finished in 2nd in this category, while Todd Blinn (a public affairs manager from Obetz, Ohio) took the bronze.
Often in this kind of competition, where every pick is graded, it’s the guys who had the poor years who really determine the winners. This year more than others. Adrian Peterson was 1st or 2nd on a lot of the entries, so Nease benefitted relative to those guys by ranking him down at 4th. He was also lower than the vast majority on Montee Ball (10th on his card but 7th in the overall balloting).
It was in the teens where Nease really started scoring. Toby Gerhart, C.J. Spiller, Ryan Mathews and Ray Rice all ranked 16th to 19th in the overall poll, and Nease had the foresight to simply leave those guys off his ballot.
It added up to a nice win.
