LeGarrette Blount

Back much better in New England than elsewhere

Is it the player or the team around him that makes a successful running back? Let's examine the case of LeGarrette Blount, a running back who throughout his career has been pretty ordinary with his other teams (Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh) but has been very successful with his current one (New England).

Over the course of the season, we track all the plays where a running back needs to pick up 1 or 2 yards to convert either a 3rd or 4th and short situation, or to score a touchdown. (We call them the money yards.) Blount in his two stints with the Patriots has been a lot better with those chances than he's been anywhere else.

The first table below shows how Blount, in his five-year NFL career, has fared in those situations with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh. The second shows how he's fared with the Patriots. He's been a lot better in New England, converting close to 2/3 of his chances (compared to 1/3 with Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh).
