New York, where wideouts go to die

The Jets have traded for Brandon Marshall, and I saw a tweet yesterday about how this was a good move for them. New York hasn't had a 1,000-yard receiver since 2007, and bringing in Marshall will help them change all that. Or so the argument goes.

But while New York hasn't produced a 1,000-yard wideout, it's not like bringing one in is anything new for them. Since 2009, in fact, they've done it five times now. Six if you want to include Percy Harvin, who fell just short of 1,000 yards in his last full season with the Vikings.

And while the Jets keep bringing in 1,000-yard wide receivers, they never have the quarterback, or the offensive system, or whatever you want to blame, to keep them at that level. In each new acquisition's first full season with the Jets, that player proceeds to fall short of 1,000 yards; in most cases well short.

Maybe Marshall will be the guy that changes this. Eric Decker almost did a year ago. But fantasy-wise, there's little reason to believe that Marshall will be anything but a disappointment with New York, just like the handful of 1,000-yarders (or near-1,000-yarders) before him.

The table below shows each wideout's last full season with his former team, followed by his first full season with the Jets. (Harvin was with New York just half a season.)
