Fanex Analysis Draft

The biggest reaches and mistakes in the 2015 FAD competition

Eight rounds have been completed in the Fanex Analysis Draft. Enough picks that I can now dissect and identify what I feel have been worst picks so far – the biggest reaches and misfires.

Trying to pick a guy or so per round, these are the one I came up with, in chronological order.

1.11 LeSean McCoy I don’t think they’ll use him much as a pass catcher, and I expect they’ll work in other backs. He’s not a between-the-tackles banger, so I expect he’ll lose some goal-line opportunities. Only the 14th-best running back on my board.

1.12 Matt Forte He’s caught a ton of passes the last two years, but I think he’ll lose a lot of that with Marc Trestman gone. I also think he’ll simply play less. They’ve really run him into the ground the last two years, and I think they’ll make much more of an effort to work in other backs now. The No. 11 running back on my board, and a guy I thought should have been selected in the third round.

3.04 Ameer Abdullah There’s been some buzz about Abdullah, but he’s still just an undersized rookie trying to make the conversion from playing in a spread system in college. I don’t think he’ll even be Detroit’s best running back. That’s Joique Bell. If I were drafting all 12 teams, Abdullah wouldn’t be selected in the first 10 rounds.

3.10 Frank Gore An old guy who can’t play anymore, going to a team with a crappy offensive line. He’s not even a top-30 running back on my board.

4.02 Todd Gurley When will he be healthy? Will he even be the best running back on his own team? Only the 30th-best running back on my board.

4.05 Carlos Hyde The 49ers have been gutted by personnel losses – both free agency and guys retiring. That includes the offensive line, which lost Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis. Both of those guys were probably among the top 5 at their positions in the league. Maybe Hyde breaks out, but he didn’t show quite enough in his rookie year, I thought, to merit being selected in the first five rounds.

4.09 Jeremy Maclin I think this is about three rounds too early. Nice player, but Alex Smith doesn’t seem to have any ability to connect on deep passes.

5.02 Russell Wilson He’s only the 8th quarterback on my board, but was the 3rd quarterback selected in this draft, before Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and others. Wilson is a nice ad-lib playmaker, but that’s a run-oriented system. And as much as he ran last year, I think they’ll dial him back to give him a better chance of staying healthy.

5.04 T.J. Yeldon Jaguars selected him early in the second round, saying they think he’s the third franchise rookie runner (behind Gurley and Gordon). But he was underwhelming at Alabama last year. If he can’t run for 1,000 yards behind that dominating offensive line, how’s he going to do it in Jacksonville? I’m not sure he’s even their best running back.

5.08 Andre Johnson Two rounds too early, I think. Another old guy who doesn’t have much left. He won’t get the same kind of opportunities in Indianapolis, where they have a lot of other wide receivers.

6.05 Rashad Jennings I didn’t think he should be picked in the first 10 rounds. Not sure he’s even one of the top 2 running backs on his own team. They signed Shane Vereen, who’s going to catch a lot of passes, and they’ve got promising Andre Williams entering his second year.

Here are all of the selections through the first eight rounds. I’ve got my own choices in bold. It’s an ongoing crawl draft. If you’d like to follow along, each of the 12 participants writes a capsule explaining each selection. To see those, go to MyFantasyLeague.com then click on the “Draft Report” link.
