Sometimes the second wave of free agency is as interesting as the first. That's when players sign for less money and less fanfare, but you never know -- there's opportunity with those players in fantasy leagues. They won't be coveted in drafts, but could wind up being usable pieces.
That's what I'm thinking, anyway, with Benny Cunningham. He signed a one-year contract to play for the Bears on Tuesday.
Cunningham didn't do much last season, stuck behind Todd Gurley in a dismal offense. He carried the ball only 21 times and caught 16 passes.
But the previous two seasons he caught 71 passes for 602 yards and a touchdown, so there's some receiving chops there. And Chicago got a combined 53 receptions for nearly 500 yards from Jordan Howard, Jeremy Langford and KaDeem Carey. Howard proved a serviceable receiver but it's not necessarily a strength; they could be looking to lighten his load by using another back in passing situations.
Cunningham's signing will likely take some chances away from Howard, but it's probably a particularly bad sign for Langford. Might find his way off the roster entirely.
