Question

Thirteen years after selecting Kellen Winslow, Cleveland selected David Njoku in the first round – two players from the same school playing the same position going to the same team in the first round. That’s happened a few times at various positions, but in one instance each at QB, RB and WR, the same NFL team has gone to the same school at the same position twice not only in the first round but with a top-5 overall pick. Who were these three teams?

Answer

The Colts (John Elway and Andrew Luck both No. 1 overall, quarterbacks from Stanford)
Tampa Bay (Bo Jackson and Cadillac Williams, 1 & 5, running backs from Auburn)
Buffalo (Jerry Butler and Sammy Watkins, 5 & 4, receivers from Clemson). The Bills have also selected a third first-round receiver from Clemson – Perry Tuttle in 1982.
With quarterbacks, just one other pair, I believe, both chosen in the first round. Packers selected Rich Campbell out of Cal with 6th pick in 1981, and the guy they have right now played at Cal.
One other team has gone double tight ends in the first round, but I thought it was too obscure to work with. The Eagles selected Keith Jackson (1988) and Steve Zabel (1970), both from Oklahoma.
