How to score ratings contest? - Report on alternate scoring systems for FIO

Earlier in the week we crowned Harry Simons of Torrance, Calif., as the 2017 Fantasy Index Open champion, but let me dip back into that issue. It’s a complex competition, and there are various plausible ways to score it.

For years we used a 20-1 scoring scale, inspired by the old voting system used to create college football’s top 20. Had we used that system, Jeff LeBeouf of Crowley, La., would have been the winner, followed by Sean Chi of Flushing, N.Y.

A few years back we switched to a 25-6 scale. The thinking there was to increase the value of hitting on sleeper picks in the late teens. If you happened to come up with a Kareem Hunt ranked 18th, 19th or 20th, he would be worth a lot more in that format (but still worth less than guys ranked higher than him). That’s our accepted format right now, and it resulted in Simons winning, followed by Patrick Chance of Dallas.

A couple of years back, Chris Liss of RotoWire (competing in the Experts Poll) pointed out that he would prefer a system where analysts weren’t killed when a player got injured, missing over half of the season. In those first two scoring system, injured players tend to be dominant – Simons and Chance finished in those top 2 spots largely because they had the foresight to leave Andrew Luck out of their top 20s entirely.

In the Liss-inspired “Waiver Wire Scoring” system, we soften the blow for picks like Andrew Luck, David Johnson, Aaron Rodgers, Tyler Eifert and Caleb Sturgis – picks that went horribly wrong. In this format, we work under the assumption you would be able to use free agent pickups to negate some of the value of blown picks. So in that format, the worst you can do with any given selection is 13th at QB, PK, TE and Def, 25th at RB (they start twice as many) and 31st at WR (where teams tend to start 2-3 – 12-team league x 2.5 WR = 30 wide receivers).

“Waiver Wire Scoring” is also unscientific, but it’s another way to look at it. Using that format, with a 25-6 descending scale, Steven Alessandrini of Flanders, N.J., would be the overall winner, followed by Marc Mayfiled of Longview, Texas.

And finally, we can also use the Waiver Wire system, only with a 20-1 scale. Using that one, Mayfield would be the overall winner, with Cole Houchens of Nashville, Tenn., as the runner-up.

Bottom line: there are many ways to score it. If we give equal weight to each of those four formats, than Steven Alessandrini of Flanders, N.J., would be the overall winner, followed by Dave Cohen’s feared Physically Unable to Perform team out of Brookyln. Those were the only two entries that finished in the top 10 in all four formats.

Allen Martirossian of Ashburn, Va., averages out as the the No. 3 overall finisher, while Sean Chi’s Ezekiel’s Wet T-Shirt Contest entry from Flushing, N.Y. takes 4th.

Harry Simons of Torrance, Calif., is the official winner. He’s getting the giant trophy from the team at Affordable Trophies. But he drops down to 5th place overall when you factor in all four of these scoring system.

Below is a chart ranking the top 600 entries. That includes 560 complete entries (with a top 20 at all six positions) and the 40 highest-scoring entries of those who started to enter but didn’t complete the process. For each entry, you see the rank where they finished in each of the four systems, and those four formats are given equal weight in determining the overall place.

With there being 560 complete entries, you need to get in the top 56 to be able to claim finishing in the top 10 percent. If you’re in the top 112, that’s top 20 percent. If you’re higher than 280, you can at least say you finished above-average.

There were a few ties here and there. For those, I broke them using overall points of the four formats.

We’re continuing to toy around with different ways of scoring the competition. If you have any good ideas, feel free to put them in the comments section.

A little feedback from a long time customer.

Our fantasy pool is entering its 25^th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years.

I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4^th.

Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used.

Having it in a format that allows me to work the forecasts to match our scoring system and then receive updates as the season approaches is invaluable. Whoever your sources are for the forecasts are the best. Hang on to them. Thanks for the help!!

And a side note… we've got a re-draft 16-team, 20 players drafted league (drafting water boys by the 17^th round) that I've won 2 years in a row. Nobody's ever done that in 21 years… using your cheat sheet. it's an old school league that used to draft out of piles of magazines.

I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service. I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake. Your customer service person was very kind, helpful and took care of the issue immediately.

I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer, quickly realizing no one comes close.

In addition to the magazine, I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson. The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick. He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be. I was doubtful. The pick? Priest Holmes (his first dynamite year). I remember telling my dad, "that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher, dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries. "Update?", I asked. That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title! Lesson learned.

By the way, I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row. Thanks for the detailed, hard work and an great product!
