Washington not done playing chess with Cousins

The KIRK COUSINS saga in Washington may not be quite over. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the team is considering slapping its franchise tag on Cousins for a third straight year, even after having reached an agreement to trade for Kansas City QB ALEX SMITH. Washington would not retain Cousins as well as Smith; rather, the tag would be used to prevent Cousins from becoming an unrestricted free agent, thus giving his old team control over where he winds up playing. Washington would hope to trade the tagged Cousins for a package of compensation exceeding what it paid for Smith -- but it must be noted that the move would be risky, as Cousins would count $34.5 million against the team's 2018 salary cap until a trade was completed. Stay tuned.
