Question

Jon Gruden begins his second stint as Oakland’s head coach tonight. In the Super Bowl era, who is the only other man who’s been a head coach of one team, gone to coach another franchise, and then returned for a second run? (Joe Gibbs is not the answer; he coached at Washington from 1981-1992 and 2004-07 but didn’t coach for any other team).

Answer

Chuck Knox. He coached the Rams from 1973-77, coached the Bills and Seahawks, then returned to the Rams for the 1992-94 seasons. Bud Grant and Ted Marchibroda had two runs with teams, but without coaching another franchise. Lou Saban had two runs with the Buffalo Bills, but the first was from 1962-65 (before the Super Bowl era).
