Question

In this century, who are the only three quarterbacks who have carried the ball more than 15 times in a game? Hint: All three also are Heisman Trophy winners.

Answer

Lamar Jackson on Sunday (27-117 against Cincinnati)
Tim Tebow, 2011 (22-67 at San Diego)
Cam Newton, 2014 (17-107 in a 37-37 tie at Cincinnati)

Michael Vick is the only other quarterback who's reached 15, in a game against the Giants in 2004. The 14-carry mark has been reached 10 times (with half of those by Newton).

Numbers compiled using the search tools at Pro Football Reference.

Bobby Douglass 1973 and David Woodley 1981 are also in this group

Huh? I should have figured it was too good to be true. I went back and tried their search tools again. I'm not getting Douglass or Woodley to come up, so I fear that may also be some other quarterbacks from way back who have done this. Billy Kilmer and John Hadl I think played some running back in college. Steve Grogan had a year with 11 rushing touchdowns. There have been a lot of good running quarterbacks. So I'm tightening up the parameters and hoping for the best.

Dennis: How, by the way, did you dig up David Woodley? I can understand why you would run a check on Bobby Douglass, who is well known for running for more than 900 yards in a season with the Bears way back when. I don't understand how Woodley would get into the discussion.

I googled " most rushing attempts by a QB in a game". They named a few players and the year it occurred. I googled the player, pro football reference, the year and then game logs for that year
