Question

The Raiders twice have had three Heisman Trophy winners on their roster. Marcus Allen, Bo Jackson and Tim Brown in the late ‘80s, and Brown, Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson in 1998. What is the only other franchise in the Super Bowl era that has had a roster with three Heisman winners?

Answer

Kansas City in 1970, with Billy Cannon, Mike Garrett and John Huarte. This question was submitted via the Mailbag. Apologies, but I didn’t make a note of who sent it in.

Tough one. Most of your readers probably weren't born by 1970 and I've never even heard of John Huarte. Maybe make it a little easier by leading with the Kansas City group and asking us to guess the other Team.

Thanks, Johnny. It's a good question. Very difficult, however. I'm 54, so I never saw Cannon, Garrett or Huarte play. I've heard the names, but they're from way back. I am hopeful that since Oakland and Kansas City play this week, that was able to steer some readers in the right direction. (But for me, even if the question was "Which three Heisman winners played for KC in 1970" I would be able to name any of them. Maybe Garrett.

Here's a question: What team playing in Chicago was named the Monsters of the Midway? Wrong! It's not the Bears. It's the U of Chicago Maroons. But I would appreciate if someone would forward my appreciation for the homage extended by Mitch Turbotski with his Thanksgiving day sweatshirt.

I googled John Huarte and he won the Heisman as Notre Dame's QB in 1964. He was drafted by the NY Jets but ended up as 2nd string behind someone named Joe Namath. Then, he bounced around with a few Teams but didn't have a very successful NFL career before retiring in 1973. I collected Topps Football cards as a kid in the early 70's and still have them. I have a Mike Garrett card as a Charger, who probably had the most notable NFL career of the three, but not one for Cannon or Huarte. Cannon, of course, passed away earlier this year.

Raiders may get another chance of having three Heisman winners on their roster in the foreseeable future, thanks to the 100 million dollar man.

But what kind of 1st round picks are the Raiders going to get from the Bears? A number 20 this year followed by something similar (if not poorer) next year? And the Bears got a 2nd back from the Raiders.. that will probably be e.g., number 35 of the draft. Raiders may have to flip both of those Bears picks to move into the top ten of the draft....and maybe if they are really lucky, they can get a player like Khalil Mack.
