Question

The game tonight features the two teams that have called Houston home (the Tennessee Titans formerly did business as the Houston Oilers). Who are the four players who have caught at least 100 passes when playing for teams based in this city?

Answer

For the Houston Texans, both Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins. For the Houston Oilers, Haywood Jeffires caught 100 passes in 1991. Way back in the AFL days, Charley Hennigan was the second player to reach this benchmark, with 101 catches in 14 games in 1964. (Lionel Taylor of Denver was the first to catch 100 passes in a season, in 1961). If you want to dip into USFL numbers, the Houston Gamblers in 1984 had a pair of 100-catch receivers – Richard Johnson and Ricky Sanders.

Great question. Love the Houston Gamblers tidbitThat was with Jim Kelly at quarterback? Ricky Sanders was a great receiver and always so dangerous. I thought he was the best of the posse in Washington.

Washington did well picking up USFL receivers. They also grabbed Gary Clark out of that league, and he was favorite in that group. For this question, I also toyed around with quarterbacks who have thrown over 30 touchdown passes for pro football teams in Houston. George Blanda, Warren Moon and Jim Kelly. Nobody's done it for the Texans yet, but Deshaun Watson will get there.

Ernest Givins never crossed 100 catches?

Drew Hill caught 90 passes in 1991. He and Givins were under 75 catches in all of their other seasons.
