Question

Brandin Cooks played in the Super Bowl last year for New England, and he’ll play for the Rams in this year’s game. Who is the only wide receiver who’s played in Super Bowls for three different franchises? The player is a former second-round pick, and he played in one Super Bowl for three different teams, winning one of them. All three games occurred in this century, and all three were decided by double-digit points (one win, two losses).

Answer

Joe Jurevicius. Originally selected by the Giants, he played for them in their 34-7 loss against the Ravens in 2000. With Tampa Bay, he was part of the 48-21 blowout over Oakland two years later. He also played for Seattle when it lost to Pittsburgh 21-10 in 2005.

Jurevicius was a nice receiver. In the 2002 playoffs the Bucs were in the NFC championship game vs the Eagles. The Eagles had eliminated the Bucs from the playoffs the two prior years. It was cold and the Bucs had no chance, it was thought. The Eagles scored almost immediately and it was looking like a replay of prior losses for the Bucs. But Brad Johnson hit Jurevicius on a crossing route and Joe took it deep into Eagles territory setting up the Bucs first TD on the way to their win and eventual victory in the SuperBowl.

I actually knew this one but only because it was previously asked here several years ago. I guess that proves I am a loyal reader of FFI. Or maybe I just have too much time on my hands?

I was thinking about Jurevicius, But I had thought Green Bay was one of the teams. I was so sure he played with Favre's Packers before the Bucs. I can't even think of who I was confusing him with.

Let's get back to Cooks for a moment. shall we? Has anyone ever started two consecutive SBs on dfferent teams, whereby he faces the team he played for in the previous SB?

Both Chris Long and LaGarette Blount moved from Pats in 2016 to Eagles in 2017. The Lions were hopeful in 2018 but that didn’t work out!

Tom Curren is on the Patriots beat. All of last year, I don't think he said a bad word about Cooks. But right after they traded him, Curren started presenting the angle that Cooks' poor decisions were pivotal in the Patriots losing to the Eagles. Cooks got stopped short on a third-and-short end-around run (unsuccessfully trying to hurdle a defender). Curren thinks a smarter Cooks would have stayed low and picked up the first down. And Cooks lost a fumble on a big hit by Malcolm Jenkins in the second quarter; Cooks didn't see Jenkins coming and was completely blindsided. Curren argued that Cooks was stupidly running around like a chicken with his head cut off, with no idea of where people were on the field -- that a smarter Cooks would have gotten down. I don't agree with Curren's opinions on either play, but they illustrate how much more willing writers are to criticize players who are on other teams. I like Cooks, and I hope this year's game goes better for him.

Ian ,
I agree I had Cooks when he was in New Orleans .I was kind of dumb founded when they traded him to NEw England .Thomas is a stud but could just imagine what kind of numbers could have put up .I think they could have had both wr go over 1000 yards . But any way he compliments Robert woods in the passing and took pressure of Kupp .I hope he goes deep on New England and they should expect the Pats defense play man to man .If so I think there is one or two big plays deep down field .

I have 2 similar Super Bowl questions. What player had won 4 Super Bowl rings by the time the 1st 8 Super Bowls were played? And what player won 4 Super Bowl rings representing 4 different cities?

Good questions. I will mull them over. When I see "four different cities", I'm guessing two of the Super Bowls involve the Oakland Raiders and Los Angeles Raiders. Maybe MM.

First guy definitely somebody who won a pair with Miami. Maybe also played for Baltimore, since Shula coached there (player could have played in the Colts' win over Dallas). Or could have won two with Packers and two with Dolphins. Just thinking out loud.

To Ben. Marv Fleming and Matt Millen are the correct answers. Millen is also the only guy to win 4 rings with 3 teams

I am proud to say ,both kickers went to Oregon State same time.Ryan Allen was back up to Johnny Hekker and they roomed togeather.Allen transferred his Junior year to Louisiana tech. They are best friends.I think Hekker is the best in the NFL and he can also throw as you all know.He will help the Rams win the Super Bowl. Thanks Dennis for great trivia questions without the answers.Made me work and think!

Ben Hogevoll (Siletz, OR),
Looked it just to see if they both kicked left leg.found out they was on the same team should have guessed it had to do with Oregon State.

Punters on Oregon State football teams does a lot of kicking if you know what I mean. The key to Dennis Lyons question was cities not teams which I thought must be on a team that moved. That narrowed it down.
