Question

Who's the only quarterback who's started and won a Super Bowl game against the team that originally drafted him?

Answer

Joe Theisman. He was a fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 1971 but instead played in the CFL for three years. Washington traded a first-round pick for him in 1974, and Theismann helped Washington beat Miami in the Super Bowl played at the end of the 1982 season.

I believe two other quarterbacks started (but lost) against teams that drafted them. Craig Morton was a first-round pick of the Cowboys. They traded him to the Giants, and he later started against Dallas in Super Bowl XII with the Broncos. Daryle Lamonica was before my time, but he started for Oakland in Super Bowl II. Lamonica was drafted by Green Bay but chose to instead play in the AFL.

The question is more difficult than most, but I think a fair number of readers would be able to figure it out. There are only 33 quarterbacks who have won Super Bowls. Most of them very obviously weren't drafted by the team they played in the Super Bowl against. I would think some readers would cycle through through those names, quickly narrowing it down to just a few possibilities. Many who watched football in the '80s would remember that Theismann played in the CFL.

At the risk of upsetting those who don't like old-timey trivia, I'll add a bonus question: When Joe came to the Skins in 74 they had Jurgensen and Kilmer. Joe (supposedly) boasted "I'm gonna put those old guys on the bench." Billy was mad but Sonny told him Don't worry George will have Joe doing ____ when the season starts. And he was right. What job did George Allen assign Theismann?

@Jay Gilbert....I believe Theismann was a punt returner his first year in Washington

I believe Mr. Dave is right. I was on vacation last week (Hawaii) and was reading Bob Glauber's new book on Walsh-Parcells-Gibbs. It was that book that gave me the idea for the question. Theismann was a fourth-round pick by the Dolphins. He played very well for Toronto. Washington has enough confidence in him that it gave up a first-round pick to get him. But initially, he had no role for them as a quarterback. As Mr. Dave points out, he returned punts his first year.
