Question
Mike Tomlin has been the head coach in Pittsburgh for 12 years, and he’s never finished with a losing record. Who are the only two men in NFL history who’ve started their head coaching careers with even more non-losing seasons? The two coaches met in a playoff game in 1985.
Answer
Don Shula and Marty Schottenheimer. Shula coached from 1963 thru 1975 (with the Colts and Dolphins) without a losing season – 13 seasons. Schottenheimer began with 14 seasons with Cleveland and Kansas City (1984-1997). In 1985, Miami beat Cleveland 24-21 in a playoff game. (The Dolphins were upset in the AFC Championship game the next week, preventing the Miami-Chicago Super Bowl that most wanted to see.) Like Tomlin, Curly Lambeau started his coaching career with 12 non-losing seasons (1921 thru 1932).
