KC throws Shady into crowded backfield

Kansas City traded RB CARLOS HYDE to Houston on Saturday, but that was no surprise; Hyde had lost the backup job this preseason and would likely have been released if not for the trade. The real news is that within a few hours of dealing Hyde, KC signed LESEAN MCCOY to a one-year deal, scooping up the veteran who had come available Saturday morning. McCoy is nothing special anymore; he's 31 years old and has lost enough steps that he no longer entirely resembles the Shady of old. But he and HC Andy Reid have history -- Reid coached McCoy for the first four seasons of the latter's career -- and that alone is enough to worry that the signing will drop this backfield into a hopeless committee. Presumed starter DAMIEN WILLIAMS can no longer be confidently drafted as a Top 15 or 20 runner, and hard-charging rookie DARWIN "THE NATURAL SELECTION" THOMPSON could find himself playing behind both Williams and McCoy in the early going. There are plenty of numbers to go around in this offense, of course. But it's definitely harder to capture some of those numbers today than it would have been at the start of the weekend.
