Question
What team was awarded an extra first-round selection – the No. 1 overall pick – for the 1968 draft?
Answer
New York Giants. Before the complete merger in 1970 (with the creation of the AFC and the NFC) the NFL and AFL eased into business with each other, with a common draft and the two league champions meeting in a Super Bowl game. As part of this agreement, the Giants needed compensation for allowing another franchise (the Jets) in their market. So they were given the No. 1 overall pick of the 1968. They then traded that selection to the Vikings for Fran Tarkenton, who played five seasons for them (before being traded back to Minnesota in another deal involving a first-round pick). With the No. 1 overall pick of the 1968 draft, the Vikings selected tackle Ron Yary from Southern Cal. The Giants and Vikings play this week.
