Quarterback rankings

Re-ordering the rookie quarterbacks

At what point do we start souring on Dwayne Haskins? On the one hand, he’s a former first-round pick. Washington selected him there because it believes he’ll develop into a good starter. But he hasn’t shown much of anything yet.

We went through this same dance with Jared Goff. He looked remarkably awful in his first year, beaten out by Case Keenum. But Goff became a viable quarterback in his second year. The jury is still out whether he’ll become a truly elite quarterback, but he’s at least a starter.

But there won’t necessarily be a Sean McVay who’ll come along to save Haskins. Who knows who’ll be running that offense in 2020? And will that person have any confidence in building around Haskins?

So for me, I have more long-term interest in Gardner Minshew. He was only a sixth-round pick, but he seems to have a much better feel for how to run an offense – decision-making, timing, accuracy, etc. Minshew may have been drafted five rounds later in April, but more notable is where these guys would be selected if teams were re-drafting. I think at least some teams would select Minshew before Haskins.

To me, if you’re in a dynasty league, Minshew looks like the 3rd-best of the rookie quarterbacks (which I’ve got tagged with black dots). Kyler Murray and Daniel Jones have met expectations; they’re the top 2 guys. Then comes Minshew. Then comes the two prospects who thus far have shown absolutely no ability to play the position right now – Haskins and Drew Lock.

I’ve got three other rookies in my top 50, including Jarrett Stidham, Ryan Finley and Devlin Hodges. The way things are imploding in Cincinnati, I imagine Finley will get a few starts this year.

I hit dynasty leagues each weekend – one position each Saturday. This is using PPR scoring and assuming teams get to hold the rights to the players indefinitely. On these, I’m looking at production beyond this year, and I’m looking at how many good seasons players have left.

Last week: tight ends.

Nex week: running backs.
