Alshon Jeffery

Eagles could be looking to trade veteran receiver

The Eagles could be looking to trade Alshon Jeffery. A report by Connor Hughes of The Athletic suggests the veteran receiver doesn’t get along with Carson Wentz.

This traces back to October, when an anonymous player ripped Wentz in an ESPN report. Some feel that Jeffery was that player. Now, Hughes’ report suggests Jeffery wants out, and that the Eagles could like to accommodate him.

"League sources told The Athletic that Wentz and Jeffery never saw eye-to-eye and their relationship was testy," the report states. "The Eagles are looking to move Jeffery, league sources confirmed to The Athletic. And Jeffery would welcome the change of scenery."

Trading Jeffery could be easier said than done. He’s 30 and coming off a Lisfranc surgery that should sideline him until at least August. He’s also due a guaranteed $11.5 million; that’s a lot for an older receiver who’s not healthy.

The Eagles likely will be looking to add a notable receiver in the offseason. DeSean Jackson is 33 and played in only three games last year. They’re probably not interested in re-signing Nelson Agholor, who had more downs than ups in his five years with the team. Greg Ward played surprisingly well late last year, catching 28 passes in the final six games, but he’s a former AAF player who was a quarterback in college.

The Eagles drafted J.J. Arcega-Whiteside in the second round last year. With his size (6-2, 225) he could develop into a Jeffery-type receiver. But he didn’t play much as a rookie.

With Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert, the Eagles have the league’s best pair of tight ends, but they could use a top-end receiver.

Philadelphia last year was the only team that didn’t have a wide receiver with 500 yards. That’s rare. It’s happened with only 10 other teams in the last 20 years.

I think it's more like a 15.7 million cap hit this season followed by another 18.5 million 2021.Along with his injury history and his age,the hand writing is on the wall.

I have to back pedal a little.Anything is possible with the Eagles after they gave Nnamdi Asomugha a 5 year $60 Million contract and who can forget them giving Demarco Murray $42 million in 2015.

No one is going to pay Philly $11.5 Mil. for an aging, hurt Jeffery are they? Looks like Philly is stuck w/ him....

I suspect that, with the way thing have played out with the big contracts given to Jeffery, Cooks and Watkins, owners/GMs are going to be looking more closely at restocking/bolstering through the draft than going the "proven" players route. Wouldn't shock me to see the bottom fall out when it comes to Amari Cooper's presumptive signing/re-signing.

I don’t think the track record for proven receiver contracts is terrible. I looked at the top 15 (average annual salary). Julio, Thomas, Tyreek, Beckham, Evans, Hopkins, Cooks, Thielen, Watkins, Landry, Davante, AJ Green, Robinson, Diggs, Hilton. Better track record than RBs anyway.

No argument from me on the 'home-grown' guys. It seems to have been mainly guys that have been signed to FA contracts who've fallen short. Among those whom you listed, only Cooks , Watkins and Robinson (assuming we're talking about Allen Robinson).
Just so I don't come off looking hard-hearted, Cooks' situation isn't on him (concussions are a tough thing to work around - you can't project them, and only when they've become multiple do we pay a lot of attention to them).

Are you serious? You really think OBJ is worth 90 million??You also need to take a look at Demaryius Thomas 75.5 million.Another dandy,Landry 75.5 million. My favorite is Ab 68 million.what a bargin he is.

The guy who signed OBJ to that contract for Cleveland (John Dorsey) is gone and unlikely to be negotiating contracts for anyone again. But the player's a top-5 in the league when healthy. Both OBJ and Landry were jacked up this past season - Beckham needed core surgery and Landry had a torn labrum. But these guys played through those for a good part of the year. In the entertainment business (and the NFL qualifies), people vet paid that kind of money. If I had an NFL team, I'd take warriors like Landry and OBJ any day.

OBJ and Landry both was worthless. That type of reasoning is why you got your ass handed to you this year week 14 when you came up against J Winston.By the way,Vets make good money but not millions.Oh! maybe you meant get,not vet?

You got it. Meant 'get'. My aging eyes don't always catch my typos.

Il lost in week 14 to a team that was on a par with my team overall. The difference was Winston. Happens.

I am older than you and my typos are not my eyes,it's my brain.
