Jordan Reed

Concussion-prone difference-maker wants to keep playing

Washington released Jordan Reed yesterday. The tight end is currently healthy, but that was the case a year ago, too. He played in one preseason game, caught one pass, took a huge (penalized) hit, and was done for the season. He apparently wants to continue his career, but from the outside it seems like a mistake.

Reed's talent will likely get him a look from a few teams, because when he's able to stay on the field, he's a difference-maker. Prior to last year, he was able to play in at least 12 games in three of the previous four seasons (2015, 2016 and 2018). On a per-game basis, those were three of the best 75 fantasy performances by a tight end (minimum 8 starts) over those four years -- and two of the top 15 (Standard scoring). Only Gronk and Kelce had better seasons than Reed's 2015 campaign.

Of course 2015 was five years and a slew of injuries (and concussions) ago. It's not for any of us to tell Reed what to do with his life. But speaking purely from a fantasy perspective, it's hard to justify taking a flier on him. And I think the vast majority of NFL teams will be unwilling to take a shot at signing him to a contract and putting him on the field.

As a side note, Washington should be viewed as a strong candidate to select a tight end early in the 2020 NFL Draft. Vernon Davis (also hurt most of last year) retired. Rostered tight ends for the team currently include Jeremy Sprinkle, Hale Hentges and Caleb Wilson. Hentges, a former undrafted free agent, is the potential flier from a dynasty perspective, having caught 6 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown the last two games last season. (Sprinkle started 13 games last year and averaged 2 catches in those contests.) But more realistically the team will be looking for a new starter in free agency and/or the draft.

With all the FA movements, have you ever considered posting off season updated rosters? It would be a help for best ball fans.

I don't know. Roster size is 90 in the offseason, so to be thorough we'd be listing a whole lot of players with no chance at making the roster. And those guys get signed and released daily. Should a guy like Tom Brady be listed as a Patriot, or as an unrestricted free agent. I do maintain team by team depth charts starting in April, and then we run that info in the magazine.

I know some people do best-ball drafts as early as January -- yes, before the NFL season is even over. That's crazy to me. I understand everyone has the same risk, but to select players for next season before they've even completed this season is nuts. Not to mention drafting guys like Will Dissly and Jacob Hollister in early February only to have Seattle sign Greg Olsen the next day. Why add in that much risk to the draft process?

I was fortunate to ride Reed during the 2015 season, but less so to hold onto him for the last several years. The Redskins semi-secretive way of reporting his injuries didn't help. Long periods of Questionable status, Game-Time Decisions, and Starts followed by quick Injury in the last several years. I think any slight knock to the head, with his concussion history, will force him to miss 3-4 games in the protocol.

Athletes find it difficult to leave the game they love. If Reed insists on playing he’d be smart to sign for the league minimum (hopefully he managed his finances) and play mostly at the end of the year and as a postseason difference maker. That would never happen but it makes sense

I can’t see how a physician can ethically clear him to play again.

The fact that he just got cleared indicates he was symptomatic from the preseason concussion for ...six months. So yeah. Might be most likely he won’t get signed by any team.

Saw something last night on NFL Network that gave me pause about a lot of these older guys who are still trying to keep going well after their prime.
A 10-year veteran gets lifelong health coverage. Reed would stand to get something like 5 years' worth at this point. With the beatings these guys take, and the fact that a lot of the consequences aren't felt til 15-20 years later, heck, I'd hang on til I got 1o years in, too.
