Question

Who are the only three quarterbacks selected No. 1 overall who’ve thrown touchdown passes to wide receivers selected No. 1 overall?

Answer

Vinny Testaverde and Keyshawn Johnson are the kings of this category, having played together with both the Jets and Cowboys. In 2005 the Cowboys brought in Drew Bledsoe to replace Testaverde, and he also connected with Johnson. Hardest tandem to identify occurred in 2000 in Washington, with Jeff George working with Irving Fryar. Fryar was drafted by New England and had multiple good seasons with Miami and Philadelphia, but he ended up his career with a couple of afterthought seasons with Washington. Similar, George’s more notable work came on the four teams he was with prior to Washington.

I guess it is, but those are the only two wide receivers ever drafted No. 1 overall, making it then just a matter of getting the right quarterbacks. George is the trickiest one, the way he bounced around the league.

I figured out both Bledsoe and Vinny T but George eluded me. As Andy says, knowing Fryar and Johnson were #1 picks is the key.

Looking this up afterwards, there is another WR chosen #1 in the NFL draft. Dave Parks was chosen #1 in 1964 and split time between WR and TE. The closest he came to catching passes from a #1 overall QB was John Brodie, #3 pick in 1957.
