Question

In each of the last three weeks, Jordan Howard has averaged less than a yard per carry but scored a rushing touchdown. Nobody has ever done that before. In the Super Bowl era, in fact, only one running back has more such games in his career. Who is said back? He was originally a third-round pick and played his college football at Florida State.

Answer

Zack Crockett. Drafted by the Colts in 1995, but his most noteworthy work came during his eight years as a fullback with the Raiders (where he generated all four of these games). The all-time leader in this category is Tom Brady (7 games) but this is more common with quarterbacks (with them losing rushing yards on kneel-downs at the end of games). Six other running backs have had three games where they’ve scored rushing touchdowns while averaging fewer than a yard per carry: Tommy Vardell, Ted Brown, Ottis Anderson, Mario Bates, Don McCauley and (favorite of the readers) Leroy Hoard. But Howard has not only three, but three in consecutive weeks. Weird. Numbers dug up using the sorting tools at Pro-Football-Reference.com
