Question

Jon Gruden once won a Super Bowl against a team where he was formerly the head coach (when Tampa Bay beat Oakland in Super Bowl XXXVII). Who was the last person to do this as the conference level? That is, who was the last coach to direct a team to a conference championship against a team where he had previously served as a head coach?

Answer

Marv Levy. In January, 1994, Buffalo beat Kansas City 30-13 in the AFC Championship game. (Levy was the head coach in KC in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.) Only one other coach has down this. At the end of the 1971 season, Don Shula helped the Miami Dolphins beat the Baltimore Colts 21-0.
