Question
Harold Carmichael will soon be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. A standout with the Eagles in the ‘70s, he was 6-foot-8 – by far the tallest successful wide receiver in NFL history. He finished his career with three 1,000-yard seasons, and they came in an era when that benchmark was harder to reach. Among other wide receivers standing at least 6-foot-6, who was the only other one to finish a season with more than 600 receiving yards? The player was drafted in the first round, and he didn’t play the wide receiver position at the college level.
Answer
Matt Jones. Jones was a quarterback at Arkansas. Intrigued by his 6-foot-6 height and speed, the Jaguars selected him in the first round in 2005. In his best season, Jones caught 65 passes for 761 yards. He had another season with 41 catches for 643 yards. One other 6-foot-6 wide receiver has gone for over 500 yards as a pro: Tyrone Young of the 1984 Saints (he did it once). Carmichael went over 500 yards 11 times in his career. One other 6-foot-7 player has gone for 1,000 yards in a season: tight end Jimmy Graham (twice with the Saints).
