Question

Jimmy Johnson and Tom Flores are going into the Hall of Fame this summer, and they’re doing so despite finishing their careers with fewer than 100 career wins in the regular season. (Flores went 97-87-0 with the Raiders and Seahawks, while Johnson went 80-64-0 with the Cowboys.) Who is the only other coach in the Hall of Fame with fewer than 100 wins?

Answer

Vince Lombardi. Lombardi went 96-34-6 in 11 seasons with the Packers.

FWIW Lombardi only coached the Packers for 9 years. He coached the Redskins one year before his untimely death.

Bill Walsh, burned himself out. I really wonder how many more he could have won if he had stayed.

Also, Tom Flores is NOT a Hall of Fame coach.

Starting with Bruce Arians how far do you have to go back to find a Super Bowl winning Head Coach that is not alive

Yeah, what about Bill Walsh? Can we get confirmation that this question/ answer is wrong? We use these questions at work in a sort of contest...

Ben is correct. Walsh went 92-59-1 in the regular season. I can't change the wording of the question right now because we're working our way through some wiring issues on that area of the website.

Jay Gilbert's observation is also correct. Lombardi was a head coach from 1959-69. That's 11 years, but he coached the Packers for only 9 seasons. Lombardi didn't coach in 1968, and he coached Washington one season -- 10 seasons of coaching for Lombardi. The question should also include "in the Super Bowl era" in there somewhere. There are a couple of coaches from the '40s who also finished with fewer than 100 wins.

Really Dave? Tom Flores not a Hall of Fame coach? Head coached the Raiders to two Super Bowl wins. On John Madden's coaching staff when the Raiders beat Minnesota in the 1977 Superbowl. Was back up quarterback to Len Dawson in Kansas City when KC won Superbowl IV. 4 rings. Case closed

I think Marty Schottenheimer's work as a coach is more impressive than the three coaches going in this year -- Jimmy, COwher, Flores. Marty won a lot more games than any of those guys.
