Question

Tom Flores and Jimmy Johnson are being enshrined in Canton, and they’re going in with lighter resumes than most Hall of Fame coaches. Flores went 97-87-0 in regular-season games with the Raiders and Seahawks, while Johnson went 80-64-0 with the Cowboys and Dolphins. Who is the only other two coaches in the HOF who won less than 56 percent of their regular-season games? For this question, looking for a coach rather than a Hall of Fame player who also coached (Forrest Gregg, Norm Van Brocklin, etc.) The two coaches both won AFL championships.

Answer

Sid Gillman and Weeb Ewbank. Gillman went 122-99-7 in his 20 years. Ewbank also coached 20 years, going 130-129-7. Ewbank directed the Jets to a win in Super Bowl III and also won the last two NFL titles of the '50s with the Colts. Gillman's only playoff win came in the 1963 AFL Championship game (his teams lost in their other five postseason games). Flores and Johnson were both helped along by winning a pair of Super Bowls.
