Why do I get the feeling that somewhere Adam Gase is smiling? Turns out that maybe he wasn’t the only one reasonable for Sam Darnold playing poorly with New York.
Darnold – and this is hard to believe – has actually been worse with Carolina over the the last month than he ever was with the Jets. He’s averaged 159 passing yards in his last five games, with 2 TDs and 8 interceptions. That translates to a 49.4 passer rating. Only once with the Jets did he have a passer rating under 60 over a five-game period.
This is doubly strange, with Darnold earlier in the season having passed for over 300 yards in three straight games.
Whatever happened to Joe Brady being the hottest up-and-coming coach in the game?
Now Darnold is out for a few weeks with a shoulder injury, but I don’t how much the Panthers will miss him. P.J. Walker is terrible (he’s completed only 3 of 15 passes this year) but how much worse than Darnold can he be?
Below see the list of all of Darnold’s 47 career starts. They’re not in chronological order. Instead, they’re order by passer rating, best to worst. I’ve got his Carolina starts from this year in bold.
Darnold has finished with a passer rating under 70 a total of 13 times, and five of those games have come in the last five weeks.
Panthers definitely will be shopping for a quarterback in the offseason.
