The Wright Stuff

Indiana chemist captures Fantasy Index Open title

Some consider fantasy football to be a science of sorts, and it was a pair of real-life scientists who came out on top in the 2021 Fantasy Index Open competition.

Fred Wright, a 63-year-old organic chemist from New Palestine, Ind., is the overall winner. He formerly was employed at Eli Lilly, spending a year working in Ireland at one point.

The win in the Fantasy Index Open, Wright says, was especially surprising after he didn’t perform as well as usual in his standard fantasy leagues. He said the win also helped take some of the sting out of watching the Colts fritter away a playoff berth at the end of the season.

Wright ranked No. 1 (out of 609 entries) at the wide receiver position and 5th at quarterback. He was above-average at all four of the other positions, finishing with the most overall points using our complex scoring grid.

Chris Barden of Madison, Wis., meanwhile, finished 2nd. Also retired, he was an environmental scientist, and his overall entry was similar to Wright’s – 1st at quarterback, 3rd at wide receiver, and above-average at all four of the other positions. (And his real-life football season also ended in disappointment, with the Packers falling flat on Saturday night.)

As the top 2 finishers, Wright and Barden also qualify to participate in the Experts Poll in the 2022 edition of the magazine, where they’ll compete against 18 industry professionals in a similar competition.

The scoring system for this kind of competition is complex. In short, you take each player’s cumulative production, then multiple it against where the player was ranked. The higher you rank a player, the more he counts towards your overall score.

If a kicker, for example, scored 100 points during the NFL season, he would net you 2,500 points if you ranked him first (25 x 100), 2,400 points if you ranked him 2nd (24 x 100), 2,300 if you ranked him 3rd (23 x 100) and so on. Follow that process for all 120 picks at six positions, and you have your overall score.

This type of scoring system, as has been pointed out before, makes injuries important. Those who were high on players like Michael Thomas and JK Dobbins can start off in holes so deep, it’s essentially impossible to recover. So it can be useful to look at how things would turn out when scored differently. I do that every year with the Experts Poll, so why not also with these picks.

So we also scored all the entries also using a floor-based system. With this scoring format, the assumption is that by using waiver moves and trades, the worst you would do at QB, TE, K and DEF would be 13th. That’s the “floor”. That would be the best non-starting player at each of those positions in a typical 12-team league. So for scoring, I give credit only for production above and beyond that that level (everyone lower just counts as zero, whether they finished 14th, 64th or 114th).

More players tend to start at running back and wide receiver, so I lowered the bar at those positions, allowing more guys to count. At running back, I assumed every team was starting two, making the 25th-best running back the best of the non-starters. (So if you put Travis Etienne in your top 20, you would get production equivalent to 25th-best, rather than really getting hammered). At wide receiver, with there being even better depth, I assumed three starters, making wide receiver No. 37 the worst you could do.

For entertainment purposes, we did run those numbers, and there are some big movers. John Broadbent from Philadelphia was the biggest mover upwards, climbing from 361st using regular scoring to 68th in the revised format. And Chris Winder (Alamo, Calif.) moved up from 282nd to 75th.

Six other competitors moved up by at least 200 spots, while another 31 moved up by at least 100 spots. In the chart below, those who moved up by at least 100 spots are tagged with black dots, while the eight big movers have double dots.

Mark Turnbull of Aurora, Colo. was the winner using the revised, floor-based scoring system, while Greg Heminway of Cameron Park, Calif. moved up from 72nd (in the standard, official scoring) to 2nd. Scoring system matters.

But more commonly, there was consistently across the two scoring systems. Wright finished 3rd in the alternate format, and Five other finishers finished in the top 10 in both systems (including Barden).

In the chart below, you’re seeing three columns. The standard, official rankings are the middle of the three (and for those, you can see an itemized breakdown by accessing the site through your account). The “alt” rankings are the finish (1 thru 609) using the floor-based scoring system.

The column on the left shows the average of the two. On those, ties are broken by giving preference to the official rankings. Randy Koehler of Nelson, Neb. and Jack Sandler of Oldsmar, Fla., for example, both finished in 5th place, on average (Koehler finished 3rd and 7th, while Sandler was 5th in both. Koehler appears above Sanders because the official rankings are more notable.

A little feedback from a long time customer.

Our fantasy pool is entering its 25^th year and I have used multiple books and on-line tools over the years.

I have locked on to Fantasy Index as my go to for the last 5 years and have won the pool 3 of those years and finished no lower than 4^th.

Interesting to see how much more accurate you were at the end of the year compared to other books my competitors used.

I wanted to thank you for such an amazing product and your customer service. I ordered the wrong date for my update and called to correct the mistake. Your customer service person was very kind, helpful and took care of the issue immediately.

I have used your product for the past 18 years or so… Every now and then I will be tempted and look at what other magazines have to offer, quickly realizing no one comes close.

In addition to the magazine, I started buying the weekly updates years ago when my dad taught me a lesson. The draft came and dad was sitting in the 12 hole for his pick. He told me he felt very comfortable about who he was going to select but would not tell me who his prized gem was to be. I was doubtful. The pick? Priest Holmes (his first dynamite year). I remember telling my dad, "that is a decent pick but they plan to pull him at the goal line." Ever the teacher, dad explained he had purchased the Fantasy Football Index update and read Holmes would get the goal line carries. "Update?", I asked. That was 2002 and Holmes had 21 rushing TDs and Dad won the title! Lesson learned.

By the way, I have made the title game for the last 5 years in a row. Thanks for the detailed, hard work and an great product!
