Question
Georgia and LSU are two of the traditional college football powers, but neither has ever had a quarterback start and win a Super Bowl. That will change on Sunday (with Joe Burrow and Matthew Stafford starting at quarterback). In the Super Bowl era, what are the only two universities that have had more players selected in the first round than LSU and Georgia combined but also have never had a quarterback start and win a Super Bowl game?
Answer
Ohio State and Southern Cal. Including the summer supplemental drafts, both have had 72 players selected with first-round picks. LSU has had 36 players chosen in the first round, while Georgia is at 33. College powers not producing as many dominant quarterbacks isn’t as rare as you might think. There have been 16 schools with at least 30 first-round picks since the start of the common draft, and only four of those 16 schools have had Super Bowl winning quarterbacks – Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, Tennessee. (Burrow, by the way, was at Ohio State for three years, completing 29 of 39 passes, with 2 TDs.)
