Question

Sony Michel ran for 94 yards and a touchdown in a Super Bowl game against the Rams two years ago. On Sunday, he’ll likely carry the ball for them in a Super Bowl. Who is the only other running back who has carried the ball for a team in a Super Bowl and also carried the ball against that same franchise in a Super Bowl?

Answer

LeGarrette Blount. Blount carried the ball for the Patriots in Super Bowls against the Seahawks and Falcons. The year after New England’s Super Bowl win over Atlanta, Blount helped Philadelphia beat the Patriots, running for 90 yards and a touchdown. Nine other players have had rushing attempts for multiple teams in Super Bowls, most notably Wendell Tyler, who was a 1,000-yard rusher with both the Rams and 49ers. Dorsey Levens carried the ball for both the Packers and Eagles in Super Bowls against the Patriots. Three other running backs: Tevin Coleman, Dave Meggett, C.J. Anderson. Four quarterbacks: Brady, Manning, Warner and (most obscurely) Jeff Rutledge. Rutledge never started a Super Bowl game but had kneel-downs at the end of Super Bowls wins for the Giants (vs. Denver) and Washington (vs. Buffalo).
