Question
Jack Doyle retired on Monday. Including the playoffs, he caught 309 passes as a pro – not bad for a guy who wasn’t even drafted coming out of Western Kentucky. In the last 30 years, who are the only other two undrafted tight ends who finished their careers with over 300 catches?
Answer
Antonio Gates and Marcus Pollard. Neither of them even played college football – they were converted basketball players. Gates spent his entire career with the Chargers, catching 955 passes in the regular season. Pollard spent most of his career with the Colts. Cameron Brate could join this group; he’s caught 253 regular-season passes, plus another 18 in the playoffs. Further back, Bob Tucker went over 400 catches in the ‘70s, mostly with the Giants. Paul Coffman caught over 300 passes with the Packers, mostly in the early ‘80s.
