Backfield shakeups in Baltimore, Kansas City

Two of the league's leading offenses are making changes in their backfields this week, one because of health and the other seemingly on merit. Baltimore placed RB J.K. DOBBINS on injured reserve Friday, as the surgically "repaired" knee that acted up on him last week will require an additional procedure that's expected to sideline Dobbins for four to six weeks. Luckily for the Ravens, GUS EDWARDS is available to take Dobbins's roster spot, as Edwards has progressed sufficiently from his own 2021 knee injury to make his season debut vs. Cleveland this afternoon -- albeit in a likely committee with Kenyan Drake and Justice Hill. Meanwhile Kansas City is also promoting one guy ahead of another, but in this case there is no injury to account for the move. Rather, the team will start rookie ISIAH PACHECO today at San Francisco, with erstwhile starter CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE remaining involved in some capacity, just scaling back from his usual workload. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Kansas City is making the move now because the team believes Pacheco has made sufficient progress in the passing game -- both as a blocker and as a receiver -- to warrant more regular playing time. Which looks pretty bad for Edwards-Helaire, as the passing game was always assumed to be where he'd shine brightest.
