Question
Tampa Bay plays at San Francisco today. What player, a first-round pick by the 49ers, was the original starting quarterback for the Buccaneers?
Answer
Steve Spurrier. The No. 3 pick of the 1967 draft, Spurrier spent most of his career in San Francisco stuck behind John Brodie, starting only 26 games in nine years. His final season was with the winless Bucs in 1976; he played in all 14 games, starting 12 of them. That team is generally regarded as the worst in league history, losing 10 of its 14 games by at least 17 points.
