Tampa Bay releases Ryan Succop. Not a surprise, and I’m not sure that we’ll see him again.
Succop has had a nice career since between chosen with the last pick of the 2009 draft, including winning a Super Bowl, but leg strength is an issue for him. With him being 36, I don’t think most teams will be interested in having him come into compete for a job.
Succop’s short-range accuracy is fine. He can adequately handle extra points and field goals inside 45 yards. But in today’s NFL, the expectation is that there will also be some longer field goals, and Succop has struggled in that range.
Over the last four years, Succop has converted only 3 of his 11 field goal attempts from 50-plus; that includes 2 of 7 last year. Of the 29 other kickers who’ve attempted at least 10 field goals from that range since 2019, only one hasn’t made at least half of his tries. Six have converted at least 80 percent.
